National Family Week - November 19-25
National Family Week is November 19-25. During this week, families are encouraged to spend time together and with others in their communities. PreschoolRock.com supports National Family Week by teaching preschoolers about the importance of connecting with neighbors and communities. Strong communities means strong children! Take time out with your preschooler this holiday week to focus on your community.
Community Food Security - Helping Communities Be Strong
Food is a great connector. Ensuring individuals have enough food to meet their nutritional needs is a basic step toward building strong communities. Sharing food is also a wonderful way to interact with others in your community. You and your preschooler can use food to meet neighbors and to create a more self-reliant community. Preschool Nutrition supports National Family Week with ways you can support community food security:
Buy and eat food grown in or near your community. By doing so, you will be supporting local farmers and workers and helping to create a self-reliant community. Buy locally-grown food at a local farmer's market, encourage your grocery store to buy from local producers, or simply read signs and labels at your grocery store to help choose locally produced items when available.
Donate to your local food bank. Teach your preschooler a very important lesson about sharing with others who are less fortunate. Visit the local food bank or soup kitchen with your preschooler first to ask what items are most needed. This is a busy time of year for food banks so you could also ask if there are other ways you can help.
Plant an edible garden. You can start a fruit and vegetable garden any time of year. November is a good time of year for planning a garden: choose a sunny site for your garden, add organic material to enhance the soil's fertility, and gather information about what and when to plant. When springtime comes, you will have your very own source of good eats and hopefully some to share with neighbors!
Help a neighbor get groceries. Do you have an elderly neighbor or a neighbor who needs assistance to travel? You and your preschooler can offer a grocery-delivery service. Help them out this week or make a long-lasting connection and offer to help each week or month.
